Let’s talk about water. Do you drink enough? Quick take this as your reminder, have a glass of water right now. Good work, you’ve got 1 out of your 8 glasses done for the day. We all know water is important and we sure know it’s good for us. According to HealthDirect, “water is an essential part of a healthy balanced diet because the body relies on it to function properly”. We literally need water to live, but there is also a bunch of other cool stuff that happens to your body when you keep up your regular water intake. So just in case you need it, here are 7 reasons to remind you why it's important to make sure you drink enough water every day.

1. Water helps keep your skin hydrated and youthful

To quote Derek Zoolander “moisture is the essence of wetness, and wetness is the essence of beauty”. Increased water consumption has been said to help your skin appear youthful and more radiant.

2. It reduces the chances of a hangover

There is a reason that water helps with that nasty Saturday morning hangover. It keeps your liver and kidney working their best and we all know that those organs are the ones who get the biggest work out during (and after) a big night out.

3. Increase your metabolism

Remember when you were 20 and lived on a steady diet of cheeseburgers and french fries but barely gained a kilo? Well that my friend is because of that early 20s metabolism anyone past the age of 24 still dreams of. Increasing your water intake is known to help get your metabolism running at it’s best. You might not be back to 20 year old you, but you sure can try.

4. Am I really hungry? Or just bored?

Put your hand up if you’ve become a victim of the COVID boredom kilos? We’ve all been there, not sure if you’re hungry or just bored so you end up in a bag of chips until you figure it out. Well taking a few sips of water instead of eating in those instances is a sure way to curb your appetite or at the very least distract yourself from mindless snacking.

5. It’s the perfect study (or late night work deadline) accompaniment

Because your brain is made up of such a large quantity of water, drinking it helps with your focus, concentration, energy levels and helps you stay more alert.

6. Water boosts performance during exercise

If you’ve got a competitive spirit then this reason is for you! Drinking water boosts performance during sport and exercise. This means you’re able to perform at your best whether it’s group sport, a hot yoga class or that Sunday morning HIIT sesh.

7. It removes toxins from your body

Water helps get things moving in every part of the body - bowels, liver, kidneys and your digestive system all rely on regular water intake.
