There are two types of people in the world when it comes to Christmas. The first type of person is the person who is running through the shopping center with their eyes shut until Christmas Eve when they’re panicking buying socks for dad. The second type of person is the one who starts planning for Christmas in April and has presents purchased and stashed away all year long. As you can probably guess, we are the second person. So to inspire you to not be mad dashing around the shops in December, we wanted to run you through some of our best savvy hacks to make sure you’re shopping smart this Christmas (and maybe saving yourself a bit of money in the process).

1. Shop The Sales

There is nothing worse than getting to the week before Christmas and being faced with a daunting list of Christmas presents to buy. ClickFrenzy, Black Friday, Big W Toy Sale and general end of season sales are all a great opportunity to buy throughout the year and make big savings. It might be too late for you this year, but hey it’s never too early to start on the list for 2021.

2. Keep Track of Your Purchases

If you’re a planner and like to buy presents throughout the year, it’s easy to lose track of what you’re buying. The best way to keep on top of your gifts for each person in your family is by using an app such as GiftList. GiftList is available for both Apple and Android. That way you can create yourself a list of who to buy for and tick off as you find that perfect present.

3. Zippay, Afterpay and Layby.

It may seem a little straight forward but a great way to monitor how much you’re spending on Christmas presents is to purchase through a payment program such as Zippay, Afterpay or Layby. These businesses usually have limits on how much you can spend and easy repayment options, which means you can monitor what you’re spending and get them paid off before you head into 2021.

4. Get Money Back with ShopBack

If you’re not on ShopBack, take our advice and hit the app up. It’s home to so many different retail businesses including Target, Myer and Chemist Warehouse and also includes experience based businesses such as Bookings.com and Groupon. In the lead up to Christmas they run heaps of big promotions where you often receive over 40% back on your purchase price. Of course, you don’t see the money straight away but you can shop smart this Christmas to start your savings for next Christmas!

5. Keep It Local To Save of Shipping Times

Look, we aren’t all organisational queens when it comes to Christmas shopping. Yes, yes, I know....keeping an eye on sales and buying gifts in advance so you leave enough time for shipping isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Some of us are busy, and present buying isn’t our top priority. But don’t stress, we have the answer. Shopping through local Australian businesses is great in many ways. First off, you’re helping our economy (and let’s be honest we all know 2020 hasn’t been the kindest to the retail sector) but also you easily cut shipping times by at least half. Order Express on a Monday and chances are you’ll have it before the end of the week. You need to keep in mind that November and December is an extremely busy time for AusPost and of course they’re still under pressure from COVID, but when you shop local you have a little more breathing room when it comes to shipping which gives you a little more time to shop.
